Japan Section The Braille Mainichi Special Award "Me and My Piano" Tsuyoshi Kyoshima (9, male, Japan) |
It was the beginning of June in my third year of elementary school that I started to learn the piano.I was nervous at first, but I eventually relaxed and started to enjoy it.I have learned about ten songs, including "Puppy March," "Roaring Lions" and "Sleepy John." I didn't have my own piano at home. I wished I had a piano at home.My father gave me a piano as a gift in the fall. To be honest, it was a surprise because I kept saying that I wanted a piano, that I wanted to play the piano at home, but I didn't really expect him to give me one. My parents told me that they hadn't planned to give me a piano. But they changed their minds after they heard me chatting about my piano lessons and about how much trouble I had remembering what I'd learned in my one 30-minute lesson each week. They also spoke with my piano teacher. The day the piano arrived at our house, I was so happy that I played it over and over again. My first recital came on April 14th. The day before the recital, I was very nervous. Because I felt so anxious, I practiced a lot. The day for the recital finally come. The grand piano's keyboard had felt a little bit heavy when I played it for the first time at rehearsal. Now it was time for the recital. I was the fourth one to perform. I performed "Cuckoo" and "When the Saints Go Marching In." I was really nervous when my name was called and I bowed to the audience. But once I sat at the piano, my nerves disappeared. I played well, without making any mistakes. I received lots of applause when I bowed after finishing my performance. It was a relief to hear the applause. After the recital, a teacher from my school for the blind complimented me, saying, "Your left hand was especially good. You were very dignified." I was very happy. Others also told me I had played well. "You really got me. I'll come back to see you again next year. I'm looking forward to it." I had lots of comments like that.I'd enjoyed things myself before, but it was the first time that I'd brought joy to someone else. It was a really strange feeling. I was so happy when I realised that people could be affected by my piano playing. My dream is one day to give a full concert. I would like lots of people to attend and listen to my piano playing. Hopefully, lots of people will be touched by my performance. |
